Write for The Lighthouse Almanac

We will consider submissions that meet the following guidelines and are aligned with the mission and vision of BBA, particularly examples that spotlight the excellence and resilience of Black children.

Video Submissions

We are now accepting video submissions to be featured within The Lighthouse Almanac and on the Benjamin Banneker Association website! Submit a video that highlights your experiences, research and other resources for teaching mathematics.

All video submissions should be sent to submissions@bbamath.org. Include “Video Submission” or “Film Submission” in the subject line and a URL link to where the video can be viewed. Please submit only videos that have not been published in another journal.

VIDEO GUIDELINES

  1. A video URL and description. Include a URL link to your video (e.g., YouTube or Vimeo) and a brief description/commentary on the video. This description should be 100 words or less.
  2. Image(s) from the video. We will use this image in The Lighthouse Almanac, on the BBA website, and on our social media sites to represent and promote your video. The following website provides guidelines for appropriate image sizes.
  3. Social media links. Include relevant Facebook URLs, handles, and hashtags from your Twitter and Instagram pages.

Commentary

Commentaries should be between 500 – 3000 words. These stories can reflect a personal story or original essay about mathematics experiences with students in the classroom or another learning environment. Submissions can also reflect current events or issues related to mathematics education in supporting learners of African ancestry.

Classroom Resources

Classroom manuscripts should be between 500 – 5000 words. These pieces could describe a mathematics activity or lesson for PK-16 teachers or mathematics teacher educators. It can also discuss resources for parents and families, strategies for supporting learners of African ancestry, or tools (e.g. A Cultural Proficiency Rubric / Checklist) for educators and school administrators.

Leadership and Policy

Leadership and Policy manuscripts should be between 3000 – 5000 words. These pieces should discuss PK-16 initiatives and programs designed to advance mathematics education for learners of African ancestry.

Research

Research manuscripts should be between 3000 – 5000 words. These pieces should be an abstract of your current research or related projects, action research you are developing, or a full research report.

Submissions should be sent to submissions@bbamath.org.  Please put the submission type in the subject line when you submit. Include your name, your title, an email address and a telephone number. Also, please suggest a headline.
